METALLURGICAL SLAGS

Slag is the mineral component of iron ore and fluxes, which is separated from the liquid metal in the process of iron and steel production and accumulates on its surface.

Recycling Solutions provides metallurgical slag distribution services. We recycle and sell approximately one million tons of such by-product every year.

MANAGEMENT OF METALLURGY BY-PRODUCTS

We audit the by-products and waste of steel mills for reuse in areas of consumption and offer solutions for their efficient disposal. If necessary, we establish a system for their processing, sales, and logistics, and take them under our operational management.

GRANULATED BLAST FURNACE SLAG

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

Granulated blast furnace slag is formed in the blast furnace from flux, coke ash, and iron-bearing materials. The rapid cooling of a liquid substance with water or air forms a fine-grained bulk material in the form of vitreous or crystalline granules with an average size of 2–8 mm. Slag density, depending on the composition, is 2.8–3 g/cm3. The production capacity is approximately 2.44 million tons per year.

MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE MATERIAL

  • It hardens quickly.
  • It has cementing properties.
  • It can be used as a mineral additive.

FIELDS OF APPLICATION

It is used in construction as a component in the production of cement, binders, foam slag, and pave stones.

AIR-COOLED BLAST FURNACE SLAG

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

Air-cooled blast furnace slag is formed in furnaces when working with iron-bearing materials, however, it is not subjected to further granulation and, therefore, acquires a different structure. It is cooled with water and retains the natural particle size (this varies from 0 to 250 mm). The density of the material in the cooled state is 2700–3000 kg/m3, the bulk density is 1300-1500 kg/m3. The production capacity is up to 3.66 million tons per year.

KEY ADVANTAGES

Due to its ability to harden quickly, it is often used in construction, in particular, to pave road surfaces. A layer of slag is quickly hardened and withstands heavy loads, preventing moisture from penetrating within. Its cementing properties are advantageously used for quick and cheap cementing of a surface without additional components. Air-cooled blast furnace slag is often used in construction due to its cost advantage.

FIELDS OF APPLICATION

The field of application of air-cooled blast furnace slag is very wide:

  • Manufacture of construction materials (tiles, slag-concrete blocks, concrete products, bricks).
  • Construction of walls from slag-concrete blocks (slag blocks).
  • Road building (the asphalt bed).
  • Construction of buildings (the foundation bed).
  • The installation of reinforced concrete and solid concrete
  • Reclamation (the source of trace elements) in agriculture.

THE BASIC OXYGEN FURNACE SLAG

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

The basic oxygen furnace slag is formed during the conversion of hot metal from the blast furnace to the main BOF converter. The molten slag is poured into pits or ground compartments, where it is cooled by air under controlled conditions, forming a crystalline substance. It has an increased quantity of iron and a reduced quantity of calcium oxide and aluminium oxide in comparison with blast furnace slag.

KEY ADVANTAGES

  • It increases the resistance of coatings to impact stress (for example, asphalt concrete).
  • It gives fluidity to derived materials.
  • It is used as an ameliorant. It is rich in substances useful in soil: manganese, silicon, iron, aluminium.

FIELDS OF APPLICATION

  • In the production of construction materials (sand and crushed stone) of high strength.
  • As a recycled material in the form of flux in the blast furnaces.
  • As an ameliorant in agriculture.
  • In the production of slag wool (a small proportion of raw materials).
  • In the protection of hydraulic engineering.
